There is a historical museum inside, which explains the entire history of the castle and Cape Coast itself, as well as a souvenir shop selling literature on all of Ghana’s forts and castles, as well as the cultural history and traditions of Ghana. After a leisurely breakfast, we head south towards Elmina in Ghana's central region. The town's name, given by the Portuguese, reflects its rich history of gold mining — "Elmina" means "The Mine." Gold has long been crucial to Ghana's identity; it's even referred to as the Gold Coast, a name predating independence. Today, Ghana ranks as the world's 8th largest gold exporter and the second largest in Africa, after South Africa.
Our journey includes a stop at Assin Manso, a significant town along the historical enslaved African trade routes. Here, the Ndonkor Nsuo (Enslaved African River) holds poignant significance. Enslaved Africans were checked for fitness and bathed in this river before being transported to Cape Coast for shipment to the Americas. Many had endured grueling journeys, walking hundreds of kilometers in shackles and chains through dense forests from Northern Ghana. Once rested, they faced a final 32-mile march to the dungeons of Cape Coast Castle before their transatlantic journey.
In 1998, a symbolic event saw the bodies of two free Africans, Samuel Carson from New York, USA, and Crystal from Kingston, Jamaica, returned to Cape Coast Castle. Their passing through the "Door of No Return" and re-interment in Assin Manso marked a poignant moment of remembrance and reconciliation.
Continuing to Cape Coast, we will enjoy lunch overlooking the ocean before visiting Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The castle stands as a solemn monument to a dark chapter in history, having held more enslaved Africans captive than any other site in West Africa. Inside, a historical museum offers deeper insights into the castle's history and Cape Coast's cultural heritage. As the day draws to a close, we check into our accommodation to enjoy dinner and relax, carrying with us the weight of history and the importance of remembrance.
