Seasons
The best times to visit
The ideal time to visit Vietnam varies depending on the region due to its diverse climate.
Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Sapa, Ha Long Bay): The shoulder seasons of spring (March to April) and autumn (September to November) generally offer the most pleasant temperatures and lower humidity. Spring brings new growth and pleasant warmth, while autumn features clear skies and cooler temperatures. Summer (May to August) can be hot and humid with occasional heavy rainfall, while winter (December to February) can be cool, especially in the mountainous north, with occasional drizzle.
Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue): This region experiences distinct wet and dry seasons. The dry season (February to May) boasts warm temperatures and sunshine, making it a popular time to visit. The summer months (June to August) can be very hot. The rainy season (September to January) can bring typhoons and flooding, particularly between October and December.
Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta): This region has a tropical climate with two main seasons: the dry season (December to April), which is hot and humid, and the rainy season (May to November), characterized by afternoon showers. The showers are typically short and don’t usually disrupt travel plans significantly.
Keep in mind that Vietnam is a popular tourist destination year-round, and certain times, like national holidays (especially Tet), can be very busy with both local and international travelers. Booking accommodations and transportation in advance is always recommended.
